Solid Timber Flooring
Solid timber flooring is traditionally made from hardwood. It is extremely hardwearing, with some floors lasting over a century. And it can be very visually appealing, with a wide range of different timbers being available.
The planks used for solid wood flooring are made from a single length of wood. There are no joints or layers within individual planks. This is an advantage when the flooring is refinished; it can be sanded down many times while still keeping the same appearance and virtually the same strength. It is considered good practice to re-sand the floor every twenty to ten years, depending on how much wear the surface is exposed to.
Solid Timber Flooring Perth
Solid floors tend to not be subjected to very much processing. They are very natural in appearance because they are a natural product with minimal alteration. This natural appearance of the floor is almost entirely determined by the type of wood used, though the finish will alter this slightly. There are a fairly large range of high quality timbers available, meaning there should never be a problem finding a suitable colour or pattern for any particular situation.
Popular woods for solid flooring include:
- Solid Sydney Blue Gum
- Solid Jarrah
- Spotted Gum
- American Red Oak
- Blackbutt
- Tasmania Oak
- Red or Grey Ironbark
The only real disadvantage for solid wood is the long growth time. The trees that produce the wood take decades to mature, so the resource takes a long time to renew. This is largely offset by the extremely long life of the flooring; it will not need to be replaced for many decades, so makes no further demand on the environment once installed. Use of quality recycled wood for flooring allows for even further use of timber resources.
Stability of Timber Floors Perth
As solid planks are made from a single piece of wood they are not initially as stable as hybrid, multilayer or synthetic types of flooring. But once properly dried and settled in the solid wooden flooring changes very little with time.
